Mount Moosilauke’s preeminent historian, Bob Averill, has produced a magnificent historical work centered on pioneering 19th century photographer Amos F. Clough. A native of Warren, NH, Clough began photographing in the 1860s, and specialized in producing side-by-side stereoscopic photographs, which appear three-dimensional when seen through a stereo-viewer. Clough went on to take part in the winter occupations of the summit of Mt. Moosilauke in 1870 and Mt. Washington in 1871, during which he captured many spectacular stereoviews. Included in the book are more than 150 full-sized viewable stereoscopic photographs, as well as more than 140 additional photos and engravings. Clough’s diary from his winter sojourn atop Moosilauke is included in its entirety, along with accounts from the winter spent atop Mt. Washington. Clough’s images also feature “gems” from the natural world, including several waterfalls, and a selection of New England town, country and city scenes. The author provides a full account of Clough’s brief life and his photographic techniques, as well as numerous historical nuggets unearthed during his extensive research for the book. Book comes with a pocket 3-D stereoviewer. Hardcover, 382 pp., 8 ¾” X 11 ½.”
